Director Martin Scorsese’s 1988 film “The Last Temptation of Christ” was a deliberate departure from Hollywood’s classic sword-and-sandal Bible epics like “King of Kings” (1961) and “The Greatest Story Ever Told” (1965). Although it caused some controversy at the time in the Christian right and was banned in a few countries, the movie was generally well regarded. Critic Roger Ebert said that the film “paid Christ the compliment of taking him and his message seriously” avoiding the failings of the earlier era of films that turned Jesus “into a garish, emasculated image from a religious postcard.” John Hamer and Leandro Palacios of Toronto Centre Place have never before seen the film, but will watch it for the first time and share their reactions.
