What Happened to the 12 Apostles?
Jesus sets apart Twelve Apostles in the Gospels. But the Bible records the fate of just one: Jesus’ betrayer Judas Iscariot (whose death story is told in two contradictory accounts). What happened to the other Eleven? Famously, St. Peter’s tomb is at the Vatican, and the tomb of St. James the Greater is the destination of the Camino de Santiago at Compostela in Spain. Tradition locates the tomb of John in Ephesus and St. Thomas in Chennai, India. The others are said to buried across the ancient world from Georgia to Italy. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will outline the traditional resting places of all the apostles but will also examine the underlying sources of the traditions, which are surprisingly late and historically unreliable.
