Who Was Melchizedek?
Although incredibly obscure among Biblical characters, the few appearances of Melchizedek in the canon make him both mysterious and intriguing. A story embedded in Genesis describes him as the “King of Salem” and the priest of “El Elyon” (God Most High). After Abraham and his household successfully went to war against a coalition of kings who had taken his kinsman Lot captive, he goes to visit Melchizedek who brings out bread and wine. After blessing the bread and wine, he blesses Abraham who apparently responds by offering tithing to Melchizedek. Given Abraham’s exalted status as a patriarch who has made a personal covenant with God, this has led readers for millennia to wonder who this Melchizedek might be. The Bible provides few clues, a single line of the Psalms reads, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” And the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews in the New Testament makes an elaborate analogy between Melchizedek and Christ. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will do a deep dive into the primary sources to consider what can be know about the intent of the original writers, and will also consider how the character has been understood and portrayed in Jewish, traditional Christian, and also Latter Day Saint lore.
